The Wolf of Wall Street: More Than Just a Party, Maybe?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Wolf of Wall Street." I know, I'm late to the party. But wow. Just... wow. I've been thinking about it all day. Everyone talks about the excess, the drugs, the little people throwing party. But I keep going back to something else. Hear me out: What if the whole movie is supposed to be repulsive? What if Scorsese's point wasn't just to show us how wild things got, but to make us viscerally disgusted by it all? Think about it. The constant close-ups, the over-the-top acting, the way they glorify... well, everything awful. Take the scene where Jordan throws money at the FBI agents to get them to leave. It's played for laughs, sure, but it's also deeply unsettling. It’s like Scorsese is daring us to enjoy the spectacle, knowing that a part of us will, but also knowing that we should feel guilty about it. And it’s not just Jordan Belfort. His world seems filled with people who are deeply morally bankrupt, and everyone around him enables bad behavior by engaging in it or ignoring it. My theory is that the whole movie is a commentary on the seductive nature of greed. It’s not just about Wall Street; it’s about human nature and how easily we can be corrupted by power and money. The ending, where Jordan is teaching others his sales techniques, kinda seals the deal for me. It is a perfect ending because he is the exact blueprint of what is wrong with society. He faces barely any consequences for his actions and is now teaching other to replicate his behavior - and maybe these new people will be smarter and won't get caught. It's not just that he got away with it (mostly), but that he's now perpetuating the cycle. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. It's probably not a super original take, and there are probably a million think pieces on this already, lol. What did everyone else think about "The Wolf of Wall Street"? Did you guys find it as disturbing as I did, or am I just being overly sensitive?! I am curious to hear your thoughts.
