Herbie Rides Again: Still Holds Up?
Okay, so I revisited "Herbie Rides Again" the other day, and it's...certainly something. I remember being a kid and just loving Herbie's antics, but watching it as an adult, wow, the plot is kinda bonkers, right? A sentient VW Beetle helping an old lady, Mrs. Steinmetz, fight off a greedy developer? Peak 70s Disney. Like, who *doesn't* love a good underdog story, especially when the underdog is powered by a feisty engine and a mind of its own! What really struck me this time was the sheer slapstick. The scene with the street sweeper painting Herbie different colours? Classic! And Keenan Wynn is hilariously over-the-top as Alonzo Hawk, the villain. He's the kind of bad guy you just love to hate, you know? I kinda wished they developed Mrs. Steinmetz's character a bit more, though. She felt a little one-dimensional, even if Helen Hayes brought a lot of charm to the role. Don't get me wrong, it's not high art, but "Herbie Rides Again" is pure, unadulterated fun. There are some dated elements, sure, and the special effects are definitely showing their age, but the heart of the film – Herbie's undeniable personality – still shines through. Plus, it's just nostalgic, I can't help but to love it. Anyone else have a soft spot for this one? What's your favorite Herbie movie? I might have to do a mini-marathon now! Maybe the Love Bug is next. One last thought, I feel like Lindsey Lohan's Herbie movie was underrated when it came out. Maybe because it was a reboot, but I really enjoyed it. Anyone feel the same?
