Is "The Family" Secretly a Romantic Comedy Hidden in Plain Sight?
Okay, bear with me, people. I just re-watched "The Family" (you know, the one with De Niro playing a mob boss in witness protection in France?). And I had... a thought. What if it's actually a super dark, twisted romantic comedy? I know, I know, sounds crazy. But think about it! The whole movie is basically about this family trying to fit in and be normal, right? Which is like, the central premise of a million rom-coms. Only instead of awkward meet-cutes and accidentally spilling coffee on someone, it's blowing up plumbing and beating up bullies. But Marie (Dianna Agron), the daughter, totally has that classic 'trying to be good but secretly badass' rom-com heroine vibe. And when she falls for the cute math tutor? Hello, rom-com trope alert! The church scene where she totally owns those mean girls is basically a makeover montage, just with more righteous fury. And then there's Michelle Pfeiffer, being utterly fabulous even when she's setting grocery stores on fire. Her dynamic with De Niro is amazing. They're basically a grumpy, dysfunctional rom-com couple, constantly bickering but you can tell they secretly adore each other (in their own murderous way, of course). Plus, the scene where Maggie Q shows up? chef's kiss So unnecessarily perfect. Maybe I'm reaching, but I swear I'm on to something. Let me know what you guys think! Maybe I'm just desperately searching for rom-coms in places they don't belong lol.
